Elliott Markow Spreads His Wings

The 2010-2011 season soars into the sunset as violinist Elliott Markow spreads his wings for Vaughan Williams' ethereal fantasy The Lark Ascending. Inspired by George Meredith's poetic tribute to the skylark, Vaughn Williams uses a pentatonic scale, giving the piece a folk-music flavor and leaving plenty of room for the NSO's revered concertmaster to embellish freely.

Big Band!

The toes are tapping, the dance floor is full, and there's a smile on everyone's face...

Such are the early responses to Symphony Big Band, the newest ensemble within the Nashua Symphony Association. First performing in March of 2010, this group continues to wow patrons of all ages with its stylish performances of traditional swing and big band music. Led by trumpeter Jay Daly, the band draws from several decades of performing experience and can play it all: traditional and contemporary jazz, Latin music, and waltz... just to name a few. Comprised of some of the Nashua Symphony's most versatile players, they are equally at home in concert settings, dinner events, corporate functions, and weddings.

Paving the way for music appreciation

In collaboration with Nashua Public Schools, the Nashua Symphony Association has been preparing sixth graders throughout the semester for a full-scale, school-day concert, which will be presented on Wednesday, May 4. Teachers use cross-curriculum lessons leading up to the event, educating students about the theme of featured pieces and their relationships to other subjects. Students are encouraged to evaluate their experience after the concert and write about what they have learned. This is often the first glimpse that these students have seen into the world of classical music, and it paves the way to a more in-depth appreciation in the future.
