Fashionable Music

Learn more about the 2008 | 09 Season's music!

Have you ever wondered what makes certain performances of classical music good, or why you like a certain composer but not others? Come find out how trends in classical music continue to change our tastes and expectations of live and recorded performances at Rivier College's Institue for Senior Education (R.I.S.E.) this Fall. Fashionable Music will be taught by Nashua Symphony's education coordinator, Kathleen Staten. Fashionable Music is listed as course number 922 and will be held Mondays from 9:00 to 10:30 in Memorial 121. Stay tuned for more information, or visit the RISE page.

In progress

As part of this year's Ripple Effect project (Cycle 3), participating Nashua High School students took a trip up to the Audubon Society's McLane Center in Concord. While there, they had a chance to learn about ways humans can have a lower impact on the environment, which will help inform their poetry for this cycle.

This fall, NH composer Kevin Siegfried will work with members of Nashua High North and South concert choirs to turn those poems into music, for performance as part of the NSA's 2008-09 subscription concert series.

Did you know that...

  • Fourteen young people sang on our April 19 concert as the inaugural performance of the Nashua Youth Choir, a collaboration we've established with the Nashua Community Music School?
  • Dozens of high school students wrote poetry for this year's The Ripple Effect project, and those poems were set to music by composers and performed by the Nashua Symphony Chorus? That student choirs from NHS North & South will join us for TRE 3?
  • Our "Once Upon a Time" concert in January was attended by nearly 200 students and parents, who raved about the program and performances?
  • Hundreds of students and parents attended our "Pizza Party Dress Rehearsals" this season? Not only did they hear our orchestra live, but they met our conductors and soloists and learned about the music - all over pizza!
  • Nearly 5,000 elementary school children experienced live performances by NSO instrumentalists as part of our "Concerts in the Schools" program in March?

Beginning this fall, we'll be partnering with Nashua's middle schools on Nashua Youth (h)EARS, a year-long effort to integrate music related to an NSO program into the 6th grade curriculum. Next spring, 800 6th-graders will be visited by the NSO and Jonathan McPhee for a live performance of Beethoven's 6th Symphony!

It's common for musical organizations to note what a small portion of their program and operating expense is covered by ticket sales. This year, about 15% of the remainder - just over $50,000 - came from individual donors like you. If we are to maintain these vital programs, your support is essential.

Please join us in making a generous gift, in an amount that is meaningful to you, to support the NSO&C's important efforts to enhance the educational experience of our students.
