March 31, 2008 HIGH NOTES Volume 2, Issue 8

Up next: Pax et Lux

Rapport between artists and audience is at the heart of the chamber music experience. Don't miss the chance to get 'up close and personal' with fine musicians, including soprano Diane Cushing (who also conducts the Nashua Symphony Chorus), pianist Ted Cushing, and the NSO Concertmaster Quartet.

Diane and the Quartet will collaborate on Samuel Barber's "Dover Beach"; the Quartet will perform Barber's String Quartet, Op. 11 (the second movement of which later became his "Adagio for Strings"); and Diane and Ted will close the afternoon with a selection of songs by American composers Copland, Beach, Bernstein, Thompson, and more. The NSA would like to thank all the audience and community members who contributed their feedback to our MUSIC DIRECTOR SEARCH Committee (if you haven't yet given us your "2-cents", visit our Music Director search page and send us your thoughts right away)! Following the performance led by Jonathan McPhee on March 15, the committee is hard at work determining which of our four outstanding finalists will lead the NSA beginning next season. Keep your eyes on our website for further updates and the eventual announcement.

CONCERTS IN SCHOOLS: Each year the NSA sponsors musicians to go into Nashua elementary schools to perform and educate children about the instruments used during an orchestral concert. This year's musicians were Jacqueline DeVoe playing the flute and Virginia Crumb playing the harp. The program began with the musicians talking about music, encouraging the children to participate by asking questions, discussing their particular instruments followed by a musical performance. The expressions on the children's faces as they participated -- sharing information on their own musical experiences -- brought home how effective the "Concerts in the Schools" program continues to be. SEARCH CANDIDATE VISITS LOCAL SCHOOL: On Thursday March 13, Music Director finalist Jonathan McPhee spent and hour with the Nashua NH North concert band. Together they worked on Ralph Vaughan-Williams' "Folk Song Suite".

Our partners: Special thanks

AN EVENT TO REMEMBER! On Wednesday, March 12, Music Director finalist Jonathan McPhee and violin soloist Irina Muresanu joined Nashua Symphony friends and supporters at G.M. Roth's design showroom in Nashua. Owner Gerry Roth said "I'm really happy to see so many people. We love hosting events like this and love supporting the Nashua Symphony." Not only did G.M. Roth open their showroom up for our reception; they also sponsored the appearance of Ms. Muresanu at the March 15 NSO concert, The Inside Story. Tim Gilday, owner of Black Orchid Grille, and Executive Chef Rich Girard were on hand to provide elegant and delicious food, and we're grateful to them, as well!

BAE SYSTEMS renewed their support of the Nashua Symphony Association with a generous gift of $7,500!

Congressman Paul Hodes and his wife, soprano Peggo Hodes, stopped by the Nashua Symphony's dress rehearsal last Friday night to get to know the orchestra better and to express their support. Springtime is here

BIRDS COME TO ROOST! Around March 7, a funny thing started happening in the courtyard outside the NSA office at 6 Church Street. Although it still felt a lot like winter, about a hundred yellow-gray birds began to appear in the trees outside our window. According to NSA Trustee (and devoted bird enthusiast) Kerry Dolan, they're Bohemian Waxwings. These cute little avians are only seen in the very early spring - and even then, not often! Several photographers visited the courtyard in the following weeks; the amazing photo to the right was taken by our own Ms. Dolan!

Nash Soloist Fund: Help keep great soloists coming to Nashua!

Last year, in honor of Maestro Royston Nash's retirement after 21 years at the helm of this wonderful organization, we introduced the ROYSTON NASH SOLOIST FUND dedicated to bringing exceptional artists to Nashua. As a result, the fund made possible the return of violinist Irina Muresanu to play Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto on March 15. Our community of donors makes this happen. Your gift makes this happen. Like most professional orchestras, ticket sales make up less than 30% of our revenue; the largest portion of the rest comes from contributions from caring individuals like you.

Your support is essential to the success of this fund. Even a gift of $21 (that's just one dollar for each of Royston's extraordinary seasons with us) is a simple yet powerful way for the community to help keep Royston's legacy going - and the great soloists coming!

I hope you will join me, and all your fellow music-lovers, in making a generous gift to the Royston Nash Soloist Fund.

DONATE NOW!

Thank you,

Eric Valliere
